GROUP ON TAKING OUR SPACE AND WELL BEING: THE POTHOLE POEM

This is a poem that I’ve given out to many clients who have found it to be a useful reminder about how we change.  I’ve added the last verse, a change from the original, which I found many years ago without an author’s name.  If anyone knows the name of the author, I’d love to know it so that I can acknowledge them.

THE POTHOLE POEM

I walk down a street
There is a deep hole in the pavement. I fall in
I am lost….I am helpless – It isn’t my fault
It takes forever to find my way out
I walk down the same street
There is a deep hole in the pavement.
I pretend I don’t see it – I fall in again
I can’t believe I am in the same place
But, it isn’t my fault
It still takes a long time to get out
I walk down the same street
There is a deep hole in the pavement
I see it is there – I still fall in..it’s a habit
My eyes are open
I know where I am
It is my responsibility
I get out immediately
I walk down the same street
There is a deep hole in the pavement
I walk around it
I walk down another street

Sometimes, I walk down that old street
Stand over the hole in the pavement
and smile to think how many times I fell in
How good it feels that now I don’t have to.

Do you still have potholes to avoid?
